Heat Treatment
The SMS Meer business area offers a wide range of plants for heating and treating metals. Through our two subsidiaries, SMS Meer S.p.A. and SMS Elotherm, we are also able to offer both energy-efficient, conventional furnace solutions and emission-free, inductive heating plants. Customers can thus be offered complete production lines with optimally matched furnace technology from a single source. Whether for tube, long product, forging, hardening or NF metal plants – SMS Meer S.p.A. and SMS Elotherm can supply the matching heating technology.

SMS Meer S.p.A. has more than 30 years’ experience in the development of technologically trend¬setting furnaces. The modern gas-fired or oil-fired furnaces impress with their high efficiency and extensive environmental protection installations. They are employed for a very wide range of heating applications and designed specifically for a given product. The advantages are:
- High efficiency with optimum energy utilisation
- Minimised emissions thanks to advanced technologies
- Sturdy and maintenance-friendly designs with durable components
- Holistic solutions including automation, transport and ancillary facilities
During the induction heating process from SMS Elotherm, the metal workpiece is exposed contact-free to an electromagnetic field by means of a coil. As a result, an electric current is induced in the material and heat is generated – directly in the workpiece. It therefore does not have to be heated by heat radiation as in a conventional furnace. The heating times are consequently very short and the temperature can be set very precisely. In a nutshell, induction means:
- Minimised energy consumption thanks to intelligent technology
- Sustainable and eco-friendly thanks to the reduction of CO2 emissions
- Fast batch changes and increased productivity
- Low unit production costs
- Integrated workpiece active power measurement for efficient quality control
The heat treatment installations:
- Induction Technology
- Quench and Temper Lines
- Furnace Plants
