Meer: a chronology

SMS Meer has been writing history since 1872 – first as an independent supplier of textile and steam machinery and later in rolling mill construction. The company joined the Mannesmann group in 1926. It was here that, from 1975, it formed a strong association with the plant engineering company Demag. SMS Meer has been part of the present SMS group since 2000.

SMS Meer has overcome a number of things throughout its history: wars and economic crises, structural changes and the internationalization of the business. The corporate culture was always strong enough to deal with even the biggest challenges.

The SMS Meer business area is now a leader in the field of plant and mechanical engineering for steelworks (long products), tubes, sections, forging, non-ferrous metals and heating technology. SMS Meer celebrates its 140th birthday in 2012 – and has remained true to itself throughout all these years.
